History Research Project

Our History 2 Jpeg

The Blackburn and District Blind Society was founded in 1881by local people for the welfare of local people. Over the years the society has changed its name and changed how it supports people experiencing sight loss.

During the society’s move to new offices at the Independent Living Service, two old books were found dating back to the early 1900’s containing records of meetings and some accounts. The books were very sketchy but extremely interesting. This discovery started us wondering how the society progressed since 1881.

At the beginning or 2015 the society started a project to record the society’s history since its foundation. The research is now in the hands of Anne Cort one of the societies long standing and valued volunteers.

You can help with this research, if you or a member of your family has any recollection of the society in any way please contact us. We need anything that will help us piece together a long and successful history that could if not recorded be lost forever.

We will return any original photos, documents or letters you have after copying them. We can take notes of your experiences or recollections.

As the project develops we will publish items of interest on this website or in our quarterly newsletter.
